Ah, yes, Nanny once again comes to the rescue. Now we will have an automatic enrollment plan. The poor dears among us are just not bright enough to know that they should save for retirement, so Nanny will make sure that we do so by automatically doing it for us. We won't have to worry our little heads about it any more. That's what Nanny is there for.

And Nanny will make sure that we all have health care coverage.
And that we will all be able to afford a mortgage.
And that GM, Ford, and Chrysler will all be taken care of.
And that all our banks will be nice and secure, even though they took, well, some unwise risks. Nanny understands.

Nanny is so nice that there will be no such thing as failure any more.

AP,
Lets take a look at another side of that "nanny".

People have no problem with nanny when 700 billion a year goes to energy costs to some countries that don't like us.

People have no problem with when nanny gives away the treasury with tax cuts for the wealthy, while attacking public pension plans, the unions, safe work environment practices and higher efficency vehicles.

People have no problem when nanny "hides" tax dollars spent on an illegal war, hiding the war dead all the while our nanny orders all of us to "go shopping, have fun and spend money."

People have no problems when nanny does not take care of 78,000 million people who have no health care for the last 2 years.

People have no problems when nanny spins the news and keeps the party going no matter what the costs of deregulation with massive tax dollars going to private military and military industrial complex, to greed of Wall St. some bank executives and some home buyers.

Read these letters to the editor in todays LA Times about this same people have no problems with "their type of nanny," now fear that we are now becoming a socialist Europe:

Why does author think a "European welfare state" is such a bad thing? I have relatives living in Holland. Everyone has health insurance regardless of employment. My cousin's mentally ill son receives free therapy, counseling, job training and medical care. My retired uncle lives in beautiful subsidized senior housing. His wife, who was left with brain damage following surgery more than 30 years ago, was in a state-supported institution until her death several years ago.

Yes, taxes are high in Europe. But my relatives tell me they are willing to pay high taxes in exchange for guaranteed healthcare, lifelong security and freedom from fear. I only wish the U.S. could be a "European welfare state."

The author fears that President Obama wants to repeal the legacy of Ronald Reagan and remake this country as a European welfare state. Well, go Obama!

The Reagan legacy has resulted in a welfare state for the very rich, leaving the working class in tatters. Let the pendulum swing back.

I think ft6 is right when he chastened me about my political posts. These types of arguments will get us no where and the financial pros who frequent this site will be laughing all the way to the bank.
AP, you are too good of a advocate for teachers 403b to get bogged down on Obama, everybody knows your politics.
Please lets get back to our focus of trying to help our fellow colleagues learn about 403b. They get enought of this stuff on cable and Orwellian radio talk shows already.

Have a good day,
Steve

PS Dan Otter will be speaking at UTLA headquarters next Saturday, 3-14 from 10:00-11:30. I will be posting an announcement. Come on down. This presentation is open to everyone. I will be driving in from the desert and lets do lunch.

Steve,

That slam was not directed at Obama. In fact, I did not even mention him. I was just as disgusted with the Republicans and their own flagrant spending (over the very items that you described - and more!) in the past eight years. I'm as disgusted with bailouts for Wall Street and Detroit as I am for bailouts of individuals who engaged in financially irresponsible behavior and now want the rest of us to bail them out. So I was truly not trying to be political in the sense of party politics.

Nevertheless, your point about getting away from the original purpose of this forum is well taken. I'll try to curb my Nanny rants. :) (But I do think that I was getting under Intruder's skin, so at least that was a plus.)

Steve

I agree with you to a point. I have relatives living in Italy. Its an amazingly citizen /family /child /friendly nation. Free health care, payed time off and guarantee of a job when one leaves for maternity, generous pensions etc etc. I hate the way we throw Socialism around as if its a terrible thing. My relatives don't have to wait months to see a doctor or to get excellent medical care. Thats just American propaganda. Is the system perfect? No. They do pay higher taxes. But, Italians are healthier than we are because of the preventative nature of their medical care system . It may be time in the evolution of this nation like it or not to include more governmental controls and options in certain areas. Its worth a s###### because things as they are and have been are not working anymore.

The problem I have about free enterprise is that corporations abuse the system and mismanage it. Then when things get bad they steal the money and leave their workers out in the cold. On top of that they have no problem asking for government handouts to perpetuate their greed which the taxpayer and investor pay for so ,whats worse paying some extra taxes upfront or having your money taken from you through greed and corruption, a sinking stock market, and unemployment every ten years or so?

I'm also sick of everyone saying we need to start spending just so we can revive the economy. Thats what got us all into this mess in the first place-personal irresponsibility on everyone's part. How about telling people to start saving for a change?

AP -you are correct to advocate personal responsibility but the fact of the matter is our great country has dumbed down , gotten lazy, feels entitled, and may no longer be capable of doing the right things for itself. I hope we can continue to be a free enterprise/capitalist system of government as our forefathers intended it to be but I doubt it can anymore without some intervention.
